The University of Calabar administration has removed certain employees from its housing to make space for junior staff and address unethical practices. The university’s representative, Eyo Effiong, informed reporters in Calabar on Tuesday.
Mr. Effiong stated that the university’s governing council ordered certain staff members to leave the boys’ quarters after proof indicated they were subletting the units to students and local residents.
“Notices were sent informing them that ownership of the units had been canceled, and residents were requested to leave by April 30, 2025,” he stated.
Inquiries showed that the personnel gathered between ₦80,000 and ₦350,000 each year from students and residents while remitting a lesser sum to the university, as stated by the spokesperson
He stated that the reclaimed apartments will be assigned directly to junior employees via the university’s housing department to guarantee accountability and appropriate rent deductions.
“This policy applies to all senior staff who abuse the facility, not solely to professors; those with legitimate complaints may contact the Governing Council, which sanctioned the decision,” he said.
Nonetheless, after the aggressive removal of residents from the BQs, several senior employees alleged that the university administration was misusing its authority. An employee, Jacob Emmanuel, characterized the eviction as arrogant and humiliating to senior figures within the academic community.
“Is management indicating that our house-helpers must now sleep in our bedrooms since the BQs have been confiscated?” asked Mr Emmanuel.
He cautioned that if not managed appropriately, the situation might result in a collapse of law and order
