At the Essence Festival, Lil Wayne went on stage with his old group, the Hot Boys, for a long-awaited reunion. Kind of.
Three of the group’s four members were onstage for the Friday, July 5 performance. However, local press sources state that Wayne didn’t appear until after B.G. and Juvenile—along with Mannie Fresh and Birdman—were done.
Wayne exited the stage after Wayne had performed for twenty minutes without the presence of his former bandmates, producer, or label head. All of them then reappeared for a last song, but without Juvenile.
Wayne claimed to be “here on behalf of Young Money fucking Records” when he changed the Cash Money insignia onscreen during his performance with those for his label Young Money.
Not just Wayne was absent from the reunion of the Hot Boys. Nor was Turk.
B.G. used to social media to share his thoughts on the absence while going live.
“You heard me, there’s only one n-gga that ain’t in this bitch?” Juvie stated. “He caused that to happen to himself. N-gga cannot take it back; he done a lot of crap. He had to feel angry with himself for not being present.
Turk, for his part, stated late last month on social media that he was doing “everything in my power” to ensure that he could perform, but that the “business side of it” might prohibit him from doing so.
There have been speculations of a Hot Boys reunion CD in addition to an onstage reunion. Lil Wayne, however, has put an end to that conjecture by claiming he has no knowledge of the possible project.
The legendary New Orleans rapper was asked about the much-rumored reunion on NFL player Cam Heywood’s Not Just Football podcast. He was taken aback and responded, “Shit, you just told me!”
Later, he refuted Juvenile’s assertions that the Hot Boys were working on an album: “Is that what he said?” I have not yet visited the kitchen. I haven’t been in that kitchen yet, and I wouldn’t lie to you.
“It hasn’t come through the window yet, so I can’t smell it, but I don’t mind going to that kitchen.” No, I can’t smell the food. They still haven’t informed me anything.
Juvenile earlier stated on Instagram Live that a reunion record was being worked on, saying, “Hot Boys is back together, man.” Turk will be with me tonight, and I will be with B.G. the next week. Wayne, Turk, B.G., and I will be performing live in New Orleans alongside Birdman and Mannie Fresh. Additionally, we have already begun work on the Hot Boys record.
