Despite the LP’s dilemma, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, stated on Friday that the party will not permit Peter Obi to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Arabambi stated that the party is trying to find a political way out of its predicament so that its presidential candidate for 2023 won’t collaborate with Atiku Abubakar of the PDP before the 2027 election. He declared, “Politically, we won’t let the situation worsen to the point where we’ll now let Mr. Peter Obi join Atiku.” We stated, “We need to explore political solutions between ourselves,” because we were aware of their ambitions.

“Nullity”

The LP spokesman also discussed the recent legal dispute that has shaken the party, in which an FCT High Court barred Julius Abure and two other individuals from posing as national executives of the organization. In a decision rendered on an ex parte application on April 5, 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court ruled that Abure, Farouk Ibrahim, Clement Ojukwu, and Oluchi Opara could not serve as national officers of the LP. However, the ruling of the lower court prohibiting Julius Abure and two other individuals from presenting themselves as national officers of the Labour Party was overturned by the Court of Appeal in Abuja in March 2024.

Leading a panel of three justices, Justice Hamman Barka declared that Abure’s appeal had merit and was thus granted. According to him, the FCT High Court erred in assuming jurisdiction over the case. In addition, the court granted Abure and the other appellants in the case a sum of N1 million. In response to the ruling, he declared on the broadcast that all of Abure’s actions between March 2023 and March 2024 are void.

“Everything Julius Abure did between March 2023 and March 2024 is a nullity, since the Court of Appeal just set aside the judgment in March 2024,” he said.
