Rap fans putting Vince Staples up against other artists don’t sit well with him. He sent a unique remark on social media on Tuesday, July 23, in response to those debating whether J. Cole or he had a better discography.
The Long Beach rapper said in a funny way, “You ngas need jobs,” and then, “I’ve yet to see one of you weird a n**gas break dance. I know you guys are so passionate about hip hop.”
The Twitter account that stated, “There’s not a single thing Vince Staples does better than J. Cole,” seemed to be the source of the back and forth. Additionally, I like to listen to Cole’s [latest] discography than Vince’s. Someone argued, “I’m a J. Cole fan, but Vince does just about everything better than Cole,” in a quote tweet that received close to 5,000 likes.
Dark Times, Staples’ sixth studio album and last release on Def Jam Recordings, was released in May. In contrast to his prior endeavor, the 13-track album had just one pre-release single, “Shame On The Devil,” and no features. In terms of production, he brought in Mike Hector, Cardo, Jay Versace, and others.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the “Norf Norf” musician explained that Dark Times is a musical representation of his personal growth. He told the outlet, “I’m 31 by the end of this year, and that’s a big difference from being 17 years old, releasing music for the first time.” Therefore, I want to make sure that, when I talk about my life, I’m going back and understanding where I came from in a particular way.
The official release date for Cole’s The Fall Off, which he first hinted at in 2019, is still pending. His April album Might Delete Later, which featured tracks featuring Gucci Mane, Ari Lennox, Central Cee, Ab-Soul, and Bas, whetted fans’ expectations. Before the song was pulled down around a week later, the mixtape also featured the Kendrick Lamar-directed song “7 Minute Drill.”
