Usher has acknowledged that Nelly was instrumental in helping him mend his relationship with his father during the difficult time before his passing.
The R&B artist talked to LEVEL about his difficult connection with his father and how it affected his own parenting style.
Usher clarified, “I was going through some personal issues.” “It was a time of decline for my father. And after having never met him in my life, I had to decide if I was going to be a part of that decline.
“Man, you know, not having a relationship with your father is bad enough up to this point,” I said in our talk with Nelly. You will be sorry if you do not visit your father when he goes away.
“I don’t think I could have closed that chapter where I was just looking for answers if I hadn’t gone to see my father and spent that time.”
In addition, the singer clarified the questions he wished to put to his father: “Why didn’t you love me? How come you didn’t take the time to get to know me? While I’m doing this, everyone else is enjoying what I created out of what you gave me. I have a name because to you. However, you never really showed up for anything.

The “Nice & Slow” singer also shared some pleasant memories of his father: “He was a very endearing person.” He had the ability to make everyone he came into contact with smile.
Usher Raymond III, Usher’s father, passed away in 2008 following unspecified medical complications. He was a recognized addict as well.
In an interview conducted in September 2023, the artist disclosed to Grant Cardone that his father wished for his pardon.
“I spent very little time with my father throughout my life, but the time we spent together was the most precious time we had,” Usher remarked. “He begged me to pardon him for his absence.”
