Trey Songz is contesting a default judgment of $11 million that was imposed on him for not replying to a battery lawsuit lodged in Las Vegas.
In 2023, a police officer named Tyrelle Dunn filed a lawsuit against the singer, claiming that in November 2021, his wife was “guided” to Songz’s hotel room at The Cosmopolitan, where she was “attacked, attempted to exit and had her phone confiscated.”
Dunn stated he heard his wife calling for assistance, and was subsequently assaulted. He stated that the injuries he sustained were so severe that he was unable to work for a month.
Songz did not reply to Dunn’s lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment against him on October 10 for $11,277,961.37.
Recently, new documents acquired by InTouch Weekly reveal that Trey’s legal team claims the singer was never officially served with the lawsuit and only discovered it through the media.
“Compelling reasons warrant the annulment of the default judgment since [Tyrelle] failed to correctly serve the summons and complaint to [Trey] as required by Nevada or California law,” the lawsuit states. [Trey] was unaware of this lawsuit until November 27, 2024, when he got messages on Instagram from fans offering their support after the news of Dunn’s default judgment was reported.
“[Trey] quickly contacted civil defense counsel during the Thanksgiving holiday and submitted this Motion to overturn the default judgment the following week.” [Trey] should have the opportunity to present his defense in court instead of facing a sizable default judgment that was wrongfully acquired in a case he was unaware of until a week before submitting this Motion. The execution of this default judgment will be catastrophic for [Trey] and will destroy his life.”
The document also highlights that a complete investigation was carried out by Las Vegas PD, which found no misconduct by Trey, exonerating him from any charges.
Moreover, Trey’s legal representatives stated that Dunn assisted the guards at the singer’s gated community, but did not serve the singer directly, thus making it invalid.
A decision from the judge on the issue is still pending.
Upon the conclusion of the inquiry in 2022, Vegas PD released a statement declaring: “The LVMPD has finished the investigation regarding the sexual assault claims involving [Songz] and found that no criminal charges will be pursued.” Should any new evidence emerge, the case will be reexamined for additional inquiry.
Trey’s lawyers subsequently released a statement, stating: “We are happy that Trey Songz has been exonerated of any misconduct and the investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has officially concluded.” We appreciate the LVMPD for their professional policing and comprehensive investigation, which revealed inconsistencies in witness testimonies and a lack of sufficient evidence. We are happy that Trey is now able to go back to his greatest talent, entertaining.
