According to the National Bureau of Statistics, there were notable price rises in June 2024 for beans, tomatoes, Irish potatoes, garri, yam, and other food items.
This was stated in the NBS’s June 2024 Selected Food Prices Watch report, which was made public on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to the report, the average cost of a kilogramme of brown beans went from N651.12 in June 2023 to N2,292.76 in June 2024, an increase of 252.13%.
One kilogramme of brown beans climbed by 14.11 percent in June compared to the N2,009.23 reported in May 2024 on a month-over-month basis.
According to the report, the average cost of one kilogramme of tomatoes rose from N547.28 in June 2023 to N2,302.26 in June 2024, a year-over-year rise of 320.67 percent.

According to the report, the average cost of one kilogramme of tomatoes rose from N547.28 in June 2023 to N2,302.26 in June 2024, a year-over-year rise of 320.67 percent.
One kilogramme of tomatoes climbed by 55.97 percent month over month from the N1,479.69 reported in May 2024.
According to the report, the average price of Irish potatoes rose from N623.75 in June 2023 to N2,423.27 in June 2024, a year-over-year rise of 288.50%.
From the N1,595.07 recorded in May 2024, the price grew by 51.92 percent on a monthly basis.
According to the NBS, the average cost of one kilogram of white garri increased from N403.15 in June 2023 to N1,135.51 in June 2024, a year-over-year increase of 181.66%.
One kilogramme of white garri climbed by 1.86 percent month over month from N1,114.72 in May 2024.
Furthermore, the average cost of a kilogramme of yam tubers increased from N510.77 in June 2023 to N2,2021.55 in June 2024, a year-over-year increase of 295.79 percent.
Month over month, it rose from N1322.36 in May 2024 to 2,021.55 in June 2024, a 52.87 percent rise.
According to the state profile research, in June 2024, Kogi reported the highest average price per kilogramme of brown beans at N3,006.43, while Adamawa recorded the lowest price at N 1,336.11.
According to the report, Kebbi had the lowest average price of N1,200 for a kilogramme of tomatoes, while Abuja had the highest average at N3,992.61.
According to the NBS, Adamawa had the lowest average price of N1,100 for a kilogramme of yam tubers, while Lagos had the highest average price of N3,376.54.
The survey states that Gombe had the highest average price of N1,619.27 for one kilogramme of white garri, while Taraba had the lowest average price of N900.
Zone-by-zone analysis revealed that the North-Central region had the highest average cost per kilogram of brown beans, at N 2,923.45, followed by the South-South region at N 2,630.03.
At N1,647.03, the North-West recorded the lowest price. At N3,261.84 and N2,852.59, respectively, the South-West and South-East had the highest average prices per kilogramme of tomatoes, while the North-West had the lowest, at N1,411.16.
According to the survey, the North-West reported the lowest price of N1,238.49 for a kilogram of yam tuber, while the South-West recorded the highest price at N2,745.80. The North-Central region came in second with N2,440.35.
According to the NBS, the two regions with the highest average prices for 1kg of white garri were the North-East and the South-West, at N1,155.63 and N1,199.62, respectively.
At N1,055.87, the North-Central region had the lowest price per kilogram of white garri.
A 150-day duty-free import window for agricultural goods was recently provided by the federal government in an effort to combat the ongoing rise in food prices and guarantee food security.
Certain food goods, including as maize, cowpeas, wheat, and husked brown rice, will have their duty duties and taxes deferred when imported over land and maritime borders.
To address the skyrocketing cost of food and guarantee food security, experts have proposed more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as tackling the problems of insecurity, foreign exchange, and transportation expenses.
