The state of Lagos is at a crossroads and faces an increasing threat from flooding and rising sea levels, so the government has issued an urgent call to action to address the growing threat of flooding. The call calls for strong flood defenses and a shared commitment to sustainable environmental practices.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab stressed the importance of strong flood defenses and a shared commitment to sustainable environmental practices in a statement posted on X.com on Thursday.

“The whispers are gone,” he wrote. The water is just outside our door and climate change is here. Around the world, cities such as Mumbai, Miami, Dubai, Dublin, Buenos Aires, Toronto, and Texas are having to deal with a new reality: violent flash floods and enormous tsunamis.

Wahab emphasized the unequivocal scientific proof that global warming is bringing to unpredictable weather patterns, increasing sea levels, and more rainfall, stronger storms, and an increasing danger to coastal people.

He said the issue has become more personal in light of the latest photos showing entire neighborhoods submerged and people fighting ferociously against merciless currents to survive.

“The science is clear,” he declared. Sea levels are rising as a result of global warming and unpredictable weather patterns. This means that coastal areas will face an increasing threat from stronger storms and greater rainfall. Have we not seen it recently? The heartbreaking pictures showing entire neighborhoods submerged, the desperate attempts to elude the merciless current.

Nearer to home, we find ourselves at a fork in the road in Lagos. Our city is thriving and a hub for both business and culture. However, we are also susceptible. The sea level rise endangers our basic existence.

In order to safeguard the state’s homes, businesses, and citizens, the commissioner called for swift action, stressing that global warming is a genuine threat that calls for coordinated response.

“This is the time to act,” he declared. Strong flood protection and a shared commitment to environmentally sound behaviors are required. Our houses, our infrastructure, and most importantly, our people, must all be safeguarded.

“There is global warming.” Make sure you always maintain a clean environment and avoid doing anything that can impede the free flow of water.
