Ahead of his impending album, The Weeknd surprised fans with a new song that lasted for more than three minutes. The singer released a preview for the song “Unprepared certainty” on Tuesday, August 6, at midnight. It featured animated graphics created by regular collaborator Evan Larsen.
The Canadian celebrity sung over depressing synths, “All I have is my legacy / I’ve been losing my memory / No afterlife, no other side / I’m all alone when it fades to black.” He sang, “You can change locations, you can change your name / They will always find a way / Turn your life to nightmares, ready for the chase / They will always find a way,” as the song changed to a soft guitar strum halfway through.
The mysterious trailer was published soon after another preview in July called “The abyss gazes also into you,” which included sneak peeks at two previously unheard songs. As of the time of posting, there are currently no details available on the upcoming project, including its title or release date. But it’s expected to be the last part of the trilogy, which began with Dawn FM in 2022 and After Hours in 2020.
Larsen provided additional details about the creative process on Instagram. He commented, “It feels immensely rewarding to finally share this three-part story, which I spent a significant amount of the early part of this year creating.” I appreciate the invitation from [The Weeknd] and [La Mar C. Taylor] to be a part of this new chapter. I express my gratitude to all the skilled artists mentioned below, who contributed to realizing my vision.
Weeknd commemorated Dawn FM’s second anniversary in January. With appearances by Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne, the project comprised 16 songs. Notably, “A Tale By Quincy,” the first interlude on the record, was also voiced by Quincy Jones. Fans’ favorites were “Out of Time,” “Gasoline,” and “Is There Someone Else?” right away.
The “Die For You” singer finished his “After Hours ’til Dawn Tour” and starred in HBO’s “The Idol” in the interim.
