Mustard has an album on the road titled Faith Of A Mustard Seed, and he has the late Nipsey Hussle to thank for the album’s identity.
In an interview that aired on Big Boy’s Neighborhood on Tuesday, June 25, the native of Los Angeles disclosed the origin of the album’s moniker.
While working on the lead single off his most recent album, Perfect Ten (released in 2019), Nipsey recommended that Mustard call the project Faith Of A Mustard Seed. But by that point, the producer had already secured the aforementioned title.
“And [Nipsey] was like, ‘Well, you gotta do Faith Of A Mustard Seed before it’s all said and done,'” he remembered.
The West Coast beatmaker originally had a different title in mind when he started working on the new project—one that he might still use—but after sampling a Luther Vandross song, he realized that Nip’s suggested title made sense—especially because his mother is a major fan of the singer.
Faith Of A Mustard Seed is scheduled for release on July 26 and will be made possible by a new collaboration with BMG.
In a statement to Billboard, Mustard stated, “I’m happy to join forces with BMG, a company known for its dedication to nurturing artistic independence, integrity, and innovation.” “Together, we’ll keep pushing the envelope of creativity and producing ground-breaking music that appeals to listeners everywhere.”
“Mustard’s approach, coupled with a proven track record of chart-topping hits, delivers unparalleled musical experiences to audiences worldwide,” BMG Vice President of Recorded Music Dan Gill said about the project. As we endeavor to further develop his talent and the significance of his music, we are excited to collaborate and support him.
Not long after Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss single “Not Like Us” helped Mustard score his first No. 1 record of his career, the new album was announced.
ScHoolboy Q has thus far expressed excitement about L.A.’s comeback to the music world under the 34-year-old producer.
The Southern California MC said on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this month that he had already heard Faith of a Mustard Seed and was eager for others to hear it as well.
He wrote, “Heard it [teary face emoji].” Hit go naive. I’m about to repeat it. LA up this year.
