Having become the first to have a rap music sent into space, Missy Elliott has further cemented her place in history, building on her groundbreaking career.

On July 12, the Virginia native and NASA collaborated to send the lyrics to her iconic song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California to Venus, Missy’s favorite planet, which is located around 158 million miles away.

NASA director Brittany Brown, who originated the concept, stated in a statement: “Space exploration and Missy Elliott’s art have both been about pushing boundaries.”

“Missy has a history of incorporating futuristic imagery and space-centric storytelling into her music videos, so the chance to work together on something truly extraordinary is quite appropriate.”

“I still can’t believe I’m going out of this world with NASA through the Deep Space Network when ‘The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)’ becomes the first ever hip-hop song to transmit to space,” Missy added in a statement of her own. Venus represents empowerment, beauty, and strength, which is why I chose it. I am incredibly grateful for the chance to spread my message and my artwork throughout the cosmos.

Later, she posted on Instagram, saying, “YOOO this is crazy!” We recently launched the FIRST hip-hop song into orbit via the Deep orbit Network and went #OutOfThisWorld with @nasa. Venus is the planet of beauty, strength, and empowerment. My song “The Rain” has officially been broadcast all the way to Venus. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning.”

“Across the Universe” by the Beatles is the only other song that has been sent into space.Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Ciara, and Busta Rhymes have launched their Out of This World Tour.
