The Los Angeles Lakers picked Bronny James with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft on Thursday, June 27, marking a historic occasion for the league. He and LeBron James became the first father-son team to play in the league at the same time as a result of their decision.

In New York City, LeBron, his wife Savannah, son Bryce, and mother Gloria James were present when the draft selection was made. Later, fans and other celebrities expressed their support for Bronny and the NBA in a shared Instagram post that confirmed the news.

One commentator stated, “Every father’s dream is to get their son drafted to their team.” Under the banner, DDG and Michael B. Jordan added the word “HARD!” and placed fire emojis. Another said, “The ultimate passing of the torch and [a] great way to go into retirement is Bron getting his son a ring his first year.”

The others who responded were Deestroying, King Combs, MadeinTYO, and 2Rare.

General manager of the Lakers and vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka commented on the state of affairs. Pelinka remarked, “That feels like something that could be magical because there has never been a father and a son that have shared an NBA basketball court in the history of the league.” LeBron’s impending free agency decision was also mentioned by the executive: “If it worked out that he was on our team next season, NBA history could be made.” And in a Lakers uniform, history should be made in the NBA.

During his time as a student at USC, Bronny averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game. Regrettably, a cardiac arrest episode and subsequent surgery for a congenital heart condition ended his season.

In April, the point guard declared for the NBA Draft while still eligible to attend college. “He needs to make some difficult choices, and he will inform everyone when he’s prepared to do so. LeBron responded, “But we will support him in everything he does as his family.”
