In the forthcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the opposition candidate, and Philip Shaibu, a former deputy governor of Edo State, has proclaimed his support for him.
Three homeboys entered the governorship campaign, according to Shaibu: Okpebholo, himself, and Labour Party (LP) member Olumide Akpata.
“I’ll stand by a homeboy. I entered politics in order to run for governor of Edo State because I believe that homeboys, or those who are aware of the struggles faced by the people, should once again lead the government. The necessity of assessment is something that even the UN discusses. We have tried with outsiders and it hasn’t worked, therefore we don’t want them. We thus want homeboy this time,” he declared.
I arrived as a homeboy today. In Edo State, there are just two homeboys in the main political parties. I decide to follow another homeboy in the APC even if one is in labor and the other is in the APC. We have also decided that godfatherism in Edo is to end, and the man the PDP is parading is a foreigner. Thus, the man the PDP is currently attempting to represent in Edo is Obaseki’s godson, and godsons will never be the governor of Edo.
Speaking outside of the 2024 Father’s Day celebration at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, was the former deputy governor. He worked as an altar server during the main mass.
Shaibu maintained that, among the homeboys still in Okpebholo, he was the best option now that he had withdrawn from the competition. He pointed out that Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo, had stated that everyone was free to pick whom to support in any election, which is why he has officially endorsed the APC candidate for governor in spite of his affiliation with the PDP.
He emphasized that his backing of the opposition is not anti-party, pointing out that Governor Obaseki was somewhat affiliated with the PDP and Labour Party in the most recent election.
“Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, asserts that everyone has the freedom to back whoever they choose, but he also fails to acknowledge that he has no authority to prevent others from supporting him or her,” the speaker stated.
“However, I take one thing away from what he said: I have the right to choose who I want to support, just as everyone else has the right to support whomever they want.”
