President Bola Tinubu has been urged to run again for the presidency in the 2027 election by the All Progressive Party (APC) in the South-South region.
Following a meeting in Calabar, Cross Rivers, on Sunday, the APC Congress South-South Zonal Executive jointly signed a communiqué that included this information.
It complimented Tinubu on his projects, strategies, and programs and added that the goal of the economic changes was to realign the nation.
The committee reiterated its steadfast backing of the Tinubu administration’s policies and initiatives concerning national security, economic reforms, good governance, and infrastructure development.
As a result of Tinubu’s May 29, 2023, announcement that gasoline subsidies would no longer be provided, Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 33.95 percent in May, as per the most recent National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report. According to the data, the headline inflation rate increased by 11.54 percentage points year over year to 22.41 percent in May 2023, the figure that was recorded at that time.
The NBS study also showed that, on a year-over-year basis, the food inflation rate in May 2024 was 40.66%, 15.84 percentage points higher than the rate in May 2023 (24.82 percent).
The World Bank has criticized the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for enacting a number of money-tightening measures in spite of the country’s growing inflation rate. The apex bank has also implemented several tax schemes in an effort to boost revenue.
As if the inflation was not enough, the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress are currently at odds with the Federal Government over a proposed minimum wage increase. FG has refused to accept N62,000, even though labor has rejected it.
However, the committee has voiced hope for Tinubu’s changes and praised the president for his dedication to the coastal road project and the start of work on both ends of the project.
The committee announced that it has decided to form a South-South reconciliation committee, which will be led by Senator Bassey Otu, the geopolitical zone’s coordinator.
According to the communiqué, the action is to close any gaps that may exist, promote cooperation, and strive toward a shared objective of enhancing the party’s visibility and clout in the area.
Additionally, it decided to mobilize party resources in order to win other states, specifically utilizing the upcoming elections in Edo State as a test case.
The communiqué further stated that the group “resolves to mobilize efforts towards the All Progressives Congress e-registration program by creating the necessary awareness to engender inclusivity, participation, and ownership of the party.”
Additionally, it voted a vote of confidence in Victor Giadom, the party’s zonal executive members, and Senate President Sen. (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio, who serves as the zone’s leader for the APC.
All party members were urged to actively engage in the reconstruction and fortification of the APC in the zone as the meeting came to a close.
