Top political leaders from several Obio/Akpor wards are currently marching in support of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in a protest.
As of the time of filing this report, the protesters were at the Rumueme Civic Center in Port Harcourt, led by Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Ogundu Chinda, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, and former Council Chairman George Ariolu.
They demand that the Inspector General of Police continue to occupy the councils and not be intimidated.
The solidarity march is taking place along Ikwerre Road, where the mob is claimed to be causing traffic.
Their outspoken support for Wike came after the IPO community ladies barricaded the Port Harcourt airport in protest on Tuesday, leaving passengers stuck as the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State deepens.
Ariolu told the audience that they supported peace and order in the state.
He remarked, “As the governor stated, no sacrifice is too great for peace. However, there is no peace without justice. You must govern according to the rule of law. As a result, we advocate for law-based government rather than discretion or impunity. Rivers is a law-abiding state. We support the Nigerian police’s position. The inspector general under President Tinubu has the authority to restore calm in Rivers State, even if provocative acts threaten to disrupt law and order.
“So, we want to encourage the inspector general and his men to continue bringing peace and order to Rivers state. We want to call on everyone to follow the rule of law. Make it clear to public officials that they must follow the law and maintain order. And as a people, we are conducting a peaceful walk around the local government this morning to meet with the people and show our support for peace and order.”
