Q-Tip has acknowledged that he disagrees with 9th Wonder’s recent proposals to create a brand-new hip-hop subgenre.

9th Wonder demanded the creation of a new hip-hop category, akin to the Grammy Awards’ numerous R&B categories, after ostensibly listening to Common and Pete Rock’s collaboration album.

“This Common and Pete Rock album begs the conversation I’ve been having with folks for at least 20 years now,” he stated on X (previously Twitter). Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop should have its own classification. We’ve heard this, mate: “Word to DO IT ALL from Lords of The Underground.”

Later, 9th Wonder made a comparison between the emergence of neo-soul in the 1990s and his concept for a new genre, saying, “Tell that to the moment in music history when they created the term ‘Neo-Soul.'” It set it apart from other R&B genres and, best of all, included a startup kit.

Following up with a fan who remarked, “To me, it’s just hip hop.” I have never given any thought to a current NASCAR release, nor do I think well of the new standard “adult contemporary.” “Totally agree… but a lot of folks inside are pounding the table for it,” the tip continued.

In an earlier statement, 9th Wonder mentioned drawing inspiration from the Common and Pete Rock record in several contexts and proposed collaborating on a project with the group Smif-N-Wessun.
