Plies has filed a lawsuit against GloRilla, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion for allegedly taking the beat to their popular song “Wanna Be.”
The Florida native claims that his 2008 song “Me & My Goons” has been violated, first by Soulja Boy in 2010 with “Pretty Boy Swag” and then by the three female rappers with their 2024 collaboration, according to court records that TMZ was able to get.
The use of what Plies refers to as a “infrared countdown beat” by Soulja and later Glo, Meg, and Cardi (the latter of whom can be heard on the remix of “Wanna Be”) is the specific point of disagreement.
In addition, Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group and
Records, Universal Music Group, Collipark Productions, and Megan’s Hot Girl Productions are listed as defendants.
As of right now, neither Soulja Boy nor GloRilla, Megan, or Cardi have addressed Plies’ complaint or the claim that they plagiarized his song.
Producer LilJujuMadeDaBeat, who has collaborated with Megan on numerous projects (although he did not provide the beat for “Wanna Be”), responded to Plies on social media.
The producer of that song, Big E (not to be confused with the wrestler of the same name), is credited on “Wanna Be,” he said, adding that Dallas rapper Lil Wil’s 2007 smash song “My Dougie” preceded all of the previously mentioned songs, including “Plies.”
“My Dougie” and “Me & My Goons” were released in 2006 and 2008, respectively. “Wanna Be” is ascribed to Big E, the producer of “My Dougie,” he wrote.
“For the record, ‘Pretty Boy Swag’ is also a remake of ‘My Dougie,'” he continued. Soulja Boy is featured on the remix of “My Dougie.” The single for that Plies album isn’t even “Me & My Goons.”
Plies has previously been involved in a disagreement regarding sampling.
Kodak Black asked the “Bust It Baby” hitmaker to approve a sample for a new song he wanted to release earlier this year, but the seasoned rapper didn’t reply.
“I need somebody from Plies camp or Plies himself or whatever to tighten down,” Kodak stated during an Instagram Live.Because I need permission from Plies to release a song that I have in the works.
“I need the shit cleared because I redid one of his songs.” I was raised by that boy. I have a hard time with Plies. Inform that boy if you see or hear this.
Kodak and Plies worked together on songs like “Real Hitta” before Plies abandoned him.
