Anuoluwapo Opeyori, Nigeria’s lone competitor in the badminton sport of the current Olympic Games in Paris, withdrew from the competition on Wednesday.
Opeyori, whose chances appeared remote from the start, lost against China’s Li Shi Feng 0–2 in his second and final Group N match.
In a men’s singles group play stage match at La Chapelle Arena Court 2 in Paris, Opeyori was unable to hold his own and lost 17-21 17-21.
In his three-player group, where only the group winner progresses to the quarterfinals, Opeyori’s defeat was his second.
He had previously lost to Tobias Kuenzi of Switzerland 0-2 (20-22 14-21) in his opening match on Tuesday, placing him last in the group.
Nigeria will now only be anticipating medals from sports other than badminton, table tennis, football, and boxing at the Games as a result of Opeyori’s withdrawal from the competition.
