Nigerians have been urged by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to always report police officers’ unprofessional behavior to the Police Complaints Response Unit instead of posting about it on social media.

At the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta, on Monday, Mr. Egbetokun made this revelation.

“We encourage the public to use the Police Complaints Response Unit instead of social media when reporting police officer misconduct,” he said.

The police chief claims that posting case updates on social media to resolve complaints frequently results in false information that compromises the force’s credibility.

Although he acknowledged that the platforms enable Nigerians to voice their opinions, he was concerned that unconfirmed material can be misinterpreted once it is shared.

However, Mr. Egbetokun emphasized the significance of encouraging accountability and openness within the force and said that the Police Complaints Response Unit has a more organized and more accountable procedure for handling complaints.
