The police have acknowledged that the general corruption within the force stems from the way Nigerian society produces dishonest individuals who are therefore open to hiring.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the national police spokesman, revealed this on Monday in answer to a query from X user @peter_eli7.
“Police in Nigeria are so corrupt.” Why not, gentleman? The internet user enquired.
The curt response from Mr. Adejobi was, “Because our society is corrupt.”
The senior officer’s matter-of-fact statement was echoed by Delta’s police public relations officer, Bright Edafe.
Mr. Edafe emphasized, “The police in any society are products of the society.”
According to Transparency International’s government defense integrity index, Nigeria is among the two thirds of nations with high-to-critical corruption risks in their security and defense sectors.
With incredibly lax controls over operations and procurement, Nigeria’s defense institutions are vulnerable to significant corruption risk. Although oversight mechanisms exist, they frequently lack the necessary resources, knowledge, coordination, and information to carry out their intended functions, according to the research.
Nigeria is considered to be at “Very High” risk. Nigeria received 27 points in the financial category, 10 in the operational category, 35 in the personnel category, 28 in the political category, and 8 in the procurement category out of the five subcategories taken into consideration by the index.
