For her 2012 hit “Starships,” Nicki Minaj recently received her third Diamond plaque from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The well-known pop-rap song sold 10 million copies in the US on Monday, November 18. In 2021, Minaj’s 2010 smash song “Super Bass” got her first Diamond record. Earlier this year, she appeared on Jessie J’s “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande, which also achieved diamond certification.
After Peter Rosenberg of Hot97 famously criticized the song during Summer Jam in 2012, Minaj later came out and said she also detested “Starships.” She promised not to play the song again during her performance at a New Year’s Eve party at E11EVEN in Miami earlier this year.
Her DJ started playing the 2012 song at one point throughout the evening, but the Pink Friday 2 rapper abruptly stopped it after rapping a few lines without much enthusiasm.
She addressed the dissatisfied audience, saying, “Sike, sike, sike.” “You guys, I no longer perform that song! It bothers me! What do you guys want me to do?
Additionally, Minaj asked why she ever made “Starships” during a 2020 Pollstar Live Q&A panel. She also expressed her wish that she had never recorded her 2014 hit song, “Anaconda.”
When asked which of her songs she regrets, she replied, “So much of my discography.” “I regret recording ‘Anaconda.'” The video is good, but horrible. “Your Love” was my very first solo song to appear on Billboard. I still enjoy the music video, but I detest the song. I could continue forever. “Starships” are something I detest; I mean, yuck, “Starships.” I ask myself, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it.”
Nicki Minaj’s now-Diamond single “Starships” was a massive smash and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, months after its release, it became a major source of conflict between her and Peter Rosenberg.
Minaj canceled her planned performance at the annual event that day after the radio DJ referred to the song as “one of the most sellout songs in Hip Hop history” when speaking to the audience at 2012 Summer Jam.
After that, the two had a falling out for a while, but they reconciled a year later when Minaj returned to Hot 97.
