Mustard says he was unaware that the rapper’s Drake hate song, “Not Like Us,” was made using his rhythm for Kendrick Lamar.
On Wednesday, June 19, the producer from Los Angeles talked to XXL about learning that his song was being used to target Drizzy.
He started, “I made that beat on my manager’s birthday, which is April 6th.” “That day, I sent [Kendrick] maybe three [beats.” He took it lightly. It wasn’t until [the song] came out that I heard it.
In addition, he described his initial reaction upon hearing the music and expressed his amazement at realizing the connection.
He said, “I was on the freeway when I heard it, and I just, like, my manager hit me, like, ‘Mustard on the Beat.'” As in, ‘Text me now.'” “What are you talking about?” is how I feel. “Mustard on the Beat, Mustard on the Beat,” was what I heard in a few more SMS that I received.
I’m like, ‘What the fuck is everybody?’ since I hang out with these folks all the time before calling my boss. I wonder, “What have I missed?” What is happening? And he says, “Dude, go to YouTube immediately.” It is no longer in. I’m thinking, “What?” “Dot just dropped a song,” he says. You own the beat.
“I’m thinking, ‘Really?'” I go, listen, and I’m thinking, “Whoa!” I began to lose my mind. I played that shit all the way to the fuckin’ plane, got to Vegas, and played it that night because I had a fuckin’ Vegas performance that night. Man, it was fucking wild. That is really absurd.
There are more Mustard songs that will liven up the summer besides “Not Like Us.”
The “Ballin'” rapper and Travis Scott gave fans a first peek at their next joint project, “Parking Lot,” earlier this week.
The song is played repeatedly in a video that the producer posted to Instagram showing them collaborating in the studio.
The brief video ended with a graphic flashing up revealing Friday, June 21, as the single’s release date.
Mustard’s next album Faith of a Mustard Seed, which is scheduled for release on July 26, will include the song.
Faith of a Mustard Seed is the sequel to 2019’s Perfect 10, which included the songs “Ballin'” with Roddy Ricch and “Pure Water” with Migos.
Working together on multiple occasions previously, Travis Scott and Mustard are best known for their 2016 hit song “Whole Lotta Lovin’,” which went on to receive a gold certification.
