Listeners won’t have to wait long for a preview of ‘Balloonerism,’ as the pre-release track “5 Dollar Pony Rides” is set to drop on Thursday (Jan. 9).
As Mac Miller’s Balloonerism is scheduled for release on Jan. 17, the estate of the late rapper revealed the official tracklist on Tuesday (Jan. 7). The 14-track album, set to be his second posthumous release, is anticipated to feature SZA on “DJ’s Chord Organ” and his alter ego, Delusional Thomas, on “Transformations.”
Songs such as “Funny Papers,” “Do You Have a Destination?” and “Tomorrow Will Never Know” are among the beloved tracks confirmed to be included in the final selection. Moreover, the collection will feature some overlooked treasures, including “Shangri-La” and “Rick’s Piano.”
Dedicated fans can also anticipate a pre-release option prior to the complete album debuting on DSPs. The “5 Dollar Pony Rides” are set to launch on Thursday (Jan. 9) at 12 p.m. ET.
It’s important to note that “DJ’s Chord Organ” will be the inaugural official collaboration between the rapper and SZA to be available on DSPs. Miller famously created “Ur” from the singer’s 2014 EP, Z. She later paid tribute to him by performing at his benefit concert in October 2018, shortly after he had died.
Balloonerism was formally revealed in November 2024 following hints dropped at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. The project will be released only days before what would have marked Miller’s 33rd birthday and aligns with the fifth anniversary of his cherished album Circles.
“Numerous fans of Malcolm know about Balloonerism, a complete album that Malcolm produced near the launch of Faces in 2014,” the estate of the “Self Care” creator posted on social media. “It was a project that held significant value for Malcolm, leading him to commission artwork for it, and there were frequent discussions about its release timing, although in the end, GO:OD AM and later albums took priority.”
They also observed that Miller often indicated that Balloonerism was significant to him.
