Other performers who got nods include Doechii, Shaboozey, GloRilla, Kehlani, and Coco Jones.
Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone were the top three nominees for the 67th annual Grammy Awards, which were announced on Friday, November 8.
Mostly because to COWBOY CARTER and its lead single “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM,” Beyoncé received an incredible 11 nominations in categories such as Song of the Year and Album of the Year. She is competing elsewhere alongside Miley Cyrus on “II MOST WANTED,” “YA YA,” and “16 CARRIAGES.”
Not surprisingly, Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is nominated for Best Rap Performance, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rap Song. For his work on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” the Compton emcee was also nominated in the latter category.
GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!,” Ye and Ty Dolla Sign’s “CARNIVAL,” and Rapsody and Hit-Boy’s “Asteroids” are also included in the Best Rap Song category. Doechii, a first-time Grammy nominee, is competing for Best New Artist against Teddy Swims, Shaboozey, and Sabrina Carpenter.
Future and Metro’s WE DON’T TRUST YOU is up against J. Cole’s Might Delete Later, Common and Pete Rock’s The Auditorium Vol. 1, Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal, and Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) in the Best Rap Album category. Curiously, the two projects listed above were marketed as mixtapes.
Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, implied in June that “Not Like Us” will be considered despite its contentious nature. It is a hot record, of course. He told TMZ, “It’s incredible artistry.” “You have an artist [who has] previously received nominations, and [Lamar] has clearly had success with the organization.” There is no reason why it couldn’t be, in my opinion.
Mason Jr. went on, “I believe the academy’s voting members value greatness.” For a complete list of the R&B and hip-hop nominees, visit the Grammy Awards website.
