Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has chastised the Nigerian police for defying judges’ and governors’ rulings on the grounds that they are following a “commands from above” ruse.

Speaking on Wednesday at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Kano Government House, Mr. Yusuf stated, “I can’t understand why the security agencies, especially the police, will not obey our orders.”

“When we give them an order from ‘above,’ they will tell us to do this or that,” he continued. The “above” is who? As the state’s top security official, I am. Go alter the Nigerian constitution if you disagree with that.

Mr. Yusuf supported the planned nationwide hunger demonstration today and mocked the police.

“We believe that every citizen has the democratic right to protest,” he said. Since certain criminals intend to take over the protest, I ask that the demonstrators proceed cautiously in their procession. I will greet you if you start a quiet procession, and if you’d like, I’ll go with you.
