Peter Obi of the Labour Party has encouraged Nigerians to seek greener pastures abroad, adding that Nigerians in Diaspora will return when things start to work in the country.
Mr Obi made this call at Peter University, Achina, Anambra State, where he donated N50 million to support the institution over the weekend.
“I have always told the Nursing Council not to restrict you people from travelling abroad after graduation. If it is not going to work for you here, go to where it will work for you,” Mr Obi said.
“We will not advise anyone to stay where it is difficult for them. If you want to seek greener pastures outside, please go. I’m sure that when we build a greater Nigeria, you will come back.”
Explaining his support for academic institutions, Mr Obi said, “This is something I do every year, and today, I’m here to give you my donation for this year. Those of us in public life should be able to earn public trust, and that is why I am here to do as I said.”
Mr Obi’s call for citizens to seek greener pastures abroad comes amid a massive exodus of Nigerians, popularly called japa.
It comes less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu appealed to graduates of Nigerian universities to exercise patriotism and avoid the temptation of seeking greener pastures outside the country.
This was contained in the president’s address at the 29th and 30th combined convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo on Saturday.
