Foreign policy leaders are responding to President Joe Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he will not be running for reelection in November.
“He’s a great man,” according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has known Mr. Biden for years.
“Everything he does is guided by his love for his country,” Mr. Trudeau continued. He is a great friend and a partner to Canadians in his role as president. Thank you, President Biden and First Lady.
In response to X, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated, “Joe Biden has accomplished a great deal – for his country, for Europe, and for the world.” He’s the reason we have tight transatlantic collaboration, a robust NATO, and a good and trustworthy partner in the United States. His choice to not seek for office again is deserving of praise.
In response, the recently appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, issued a statement saying, “I respect President Biden’s decision and I look forward to us working together during his remaining term.”
“I am confident that President Biden will have based his decision on what he feels is in the best interests of the American people, as he has done throughout his incredible career.”
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed gratitude to Biden for his consistent backing of Israel throughout the years.
“Your unwavering support has been crucial, particularly throughout the conflict. We appreciate your friendship and leadership,” Mr. Gallant said.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his admiration for the U.S. president’s “brave and dignified decision” in his remarks over X.
“I appreciate his tenacity and guidance. After overcoming the pandemic-related economic crisis and the significant attack on the Capitol, the United States has demonstrated exceptional leadership in defending Ukraine against Putin’s aggressive actions. Mr. Sanchez said, “A wonderful gesture from a great president who has always fought for democracy and freedom.”
In an official statement, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris declared, “On behalf of the people and government of Ireland. As you declare that you will not run for president of the United States in 2024, I would want to thank you, Mr. President, for your friendship and worldwide leadership.
“Our nation owes Joe Biden a great debt for his unwavering voice and passionate work toward peace on the island of Ireland in all the offices he has held.”
“There are still four months until the elections,” stated Dmitri Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin. And a lot can change over that extended period of time. We must exercise patience and keep a close eye on events. The special military operation (the war in Ukraine) is our top priority.
In response to Mr. Biden’s withdrawal from the U.S. presidential contest, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Stoere, together with his counterparts Donald Tusk and Petr Fiala from Poland and the Czech Republic, responded.
