Ice Cube has looked back on insulting Dr. Dre and the rest of N.W.A in his iconic diss track “No Vaseline.”
In an exclusive interview with HipHopDX, Cube addressed his comment about Dre needing to “stick to producing” and chuckled, saying: “All I could do was suggest to Dre that he focus on what he does best.” “Step away from the mic and give me some space, alright?”
He also talked about the similarities between the lyrics and Drake instructing Metro Boomin to “shut your ho ass up and create some drums” on his diss track “Family Matters.”
“I’m not sure [if I influenced that line],” the gangsta rap legend confessed before praising his old groupmate and his new album Missionary with Snoop Dogg.
“Dre is an impressive rapper.” Dre released a track, and everyone should take cover because the lyrics will be sharp, the delivery will be sharp, and the music will be sharp. He’s a tough MC, so I wouldn’t use that line [again].”
In another part of the interview, Ice Cube expressed great admiration for fellow California native Tyler, The Creator.
When asked about the success of the Odd Future founder, Cube commented: “That’s L.A. That’s the L.A. that many aren’t aware of — highly creative people who refuse to fit into the gangbanging culture. “They will be true to themselves.”
He then made a comparison between Tyler and a notably iconic West Coast rap group: “He brings to mind, like, The Pharycde. Here’s one more: the Black Eyed Peas originate from this place.
“There will always be groups that stick to their unique style and flavor, and they will succeed with it.” Since they aren’t conforming, they aren’t becoming what you desire; they are simply being themselves. “And you have to respect that.”
While Tyler had a remarkable year in 2024 due to the launch of his hit album Chromakopia, Ice Cube also made waves by releasing his 11th LP Man Down.
His initial solo endeavor in more than five years, the 19-track album features collaborations with Killer Mike, Busta Rhymes, Kurupt, B-Real, and Xzibit, along with his Mount Westmore partners Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Too $hort.
Cube also participated in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series championship parade and grew his BIG3 basketball league by adding new teams in Miami and Houston.
