According to manager Gareth Southgate, Euro 2024 might be his “last chance” to lead England to victory.
Since taking over in 2016, the 53-year-old has led his team to three World Cup semifinal appearances: in the 2018 World Cup, the Euro 2020 championship, and the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar.
Although the Football Association would prefer that he stay on as manager for the upcoming World Cup in 2026 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, his contract is set to end in December.
Nevertheless, Southgate stated to the German daily Bild that he might not be able to stay in Germany if he is unable to bring home a trophy.
“I most likely won’t be here anymore if we lose. Then, it could be your final opportunity,” he stated.
“If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments.”
