Hurry Up Tomorrow, a psychological thriller directed by The Weeknd, has secured a distribution agreement that will see it released in theaters across the globe.
A press announcement that was distributed on Monday, November 4, stated that Lionsgate has acquired the film’s rights. The film is an extension of the Toronto crooner’s upcoming album of the same name. In addition to handling the score with Daniel Lopatin, this will be Abel’s first feature picture. The new film also stars Barry Keoghan and Jenny Ortega.
“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement. With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in conjunction with [director] Trey [Edward Shults], his musical universe goes onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are ecstatic to be presenting it to audiences around the globe.
In a trilogy that also includes The Weeknd’s 2020 album After Hours and 2022 album Dawn FM, Hurry Up Tomorrow will be the third and last release.
It was fourteen years ago yesterday. In the late hours of the night, we held our breath before plunging into a glistening sea. He announced the endeavor, saying, “Tried to clean the wounds with melodies and lights, a bulletproof bandage to shield what lies beneath.”
“In a place where time stopped and the seasons never changed.” However, that is where the issue is. The day has seemed to go on forever. I continue to misrepresent the facts, insensitive to the sickness and resistant to the vertigo. What’s underneath — shouts silently.
“I look in the mirror and feel both old and new, stuck in limbo and unable to move,” the message goes on. I have yet to confront myself. I could add more music, but what else can I say? In my gilded cage, woes is me?
“On the global stage, the exact thing that used to make me unbeatable failed me. A fresh trauma emerged, causing chaos. There’s a fresh route ahead. I will find my identity at the end of today.
Following the publication of Hurry Up Tomorrow, as fans now know it, The Weeknd earlier alluded to ending his stage identity by telling W magazine: “I’m going through a cathartic path right now.” I’m approaching the point and moment where I’m prepared to end the Weeknd chapter.
“I’ll continue to create music, possibly under the names Abel or The Weeknd. I still want to murder The Weeknd, though. And I will. Finally. I really want to be reborn and get rid of that skin.
“The album I’m working on right now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd,” he continued. I have an obligation to do this. I’ve said everything I have to say as The Weeknd.
