According to Governor Alex Otti, it will be unlawful for the #EndBadGovernance demonstrations to proceed unless the organizers secure a police permit.
When Mr. Otti hosted former governor Peter Obi on Sunday, he made this statement.
The governor of Abia stated, “First and foremost, in order to organize a protest, you are required by law to obtain permission from security forces, primarily the police.” It is incumbent upon someone to assume accountability for obtaining consent. In the event that clearance is not obtained, engaging in public protests would be illegal.
“My last words are that people should consider the consequences of pouring out onto the streets, limiting the movement of other people and possibly causing harm and more hardship on the people,” he continued.
The Nigerian constitution does not support Mr. Otti’s assertion that demonstrators need a police authorization in order to have a demonstration. Nigerians are protected by Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to demonstrate without a police authorization.
Regarding the problem of poor governance, Mr. Otti opined that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was not the source of the nation’s resource mismanagement.
Saying that things are not challenging right now would be incredibly unjust. Things are not easy. It is true that there is hunger. However, how is the issue resolved? Economic issues are the reason the nation is currently facing, Mr. Otti stated. Will I admit that poor governance predates today and that we are genuinely suffering for it?
