Five people were slain in an alleged herder attack on the Egwuma community in Agatu Local Government Area on Monday, according to the Benue police command.

The development was confirmed to media in Makurdi on Monday by SP Sewuese Anene, the public relations officer for the state police.

According to Ms. Anene, the leadership had sent more people to the area in order to keep the peace.

The attack was confirmed by Godwin Edoh, a state House of Assembly member from the Agatu seat, who stated that there were twelve victims.

The congressman bemoaned the ceaseless murders of his fellow citizens and urged authorities to take preventative action to stop the atrocities.

“Due to this area’s high degree of porosity, the government must take decisive action,” the senator stated.

He claims that for about a year, villages like Ogbumogbo, Ejima, and others all the way down to Ikpele have been abandoned.

The herders arrive in the morning and go in the evening, taking their cattle to the abandoned communities to graze.

“The security agents are not doing enough to address this development, and the villagers left their communities for fear of attacks, which is why they are able to do these,” he claimed.
