As winter approaches, Drake is changing up his appearance, but this has only given Kendrick Lamar followers more ammunition.
The 6 God revealed that he had chopped off his cornrows, which he had been sporting since early 2022, in favor of a shorter trim in a (usually pouty) selfie posted on his Instagram Stories over the weekend.
Although it represents Drizzy’s return to a more recognizable style, it also seems to have been influenced by a particular R&B icon that he has mentioned as a musical influence.
The Toronto native shared a throwback image of Jodeci star DeVanté Swing with a similar haircut in his early 1990s heyday on Instagram Stories.
Fans of his bitter rival Kendrick, however, were unimpressed by this seeming tribute and went on to make fun of Drake on social media for forsaking his cornrows.
“What is it? The BRAIDS On X (previously Twitter), a person said, “Kendrick won, Drake cut them off,” alluding to K.Dot’s jab in his diss track “Euphoria.”
“He got tired of us saying ‘what is it the braids?'” [tear face emoji] was the joke made by another.
Others conjectured that Drake’s new, R&B-inspired appearance portends the release of his upcoming joint album with PARTYNEXTDOOR.
One X post stated, “Now that the braids are gone, it’s only about time that Drake and PND drop the album.” “A NEW ERA WITHOUT BRAIDS”
Drizzy’s longer hair garnered a lot of attention before he went to the barbershop.
Last year, the Her Loss singer was likened to Minnie Mouse after he untangled his cornrows and styled his afro in two side buns with pink clips.
Drake’s more recent hairstyle, which featured two braided pigtails with baby blue ribbons, earned more positive comparisons to Snoop Dogg.
