Enugu Rangers, the “Flying Antelopes,” won the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bendel Insurance at their home field, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, on Sunday.
The team’s win was not exclusively due to their performance. Positive performances in other games strengthened coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team’s position at the top, fending off challenges from pursuing teams.
Kenechukwu Agu and Chidiebere Nwobodo both scored, giving Rangers an important 2-0 victory. This victory is a watershed moment for the team, as it is their first domestic league triumph in eight years.
Remo Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Sunshine Stars in Akure confirmed Enugu Rangers’ status as champions. Chinadu Nwosu, playing for the “Akure Gunners,” scored twice in the second half to secure their first victory over Remo Stars, despite Ahmed Akinyele’s consolation.
Rangers gained an insurmountable five-point lead at the top of the league table with their victory and the positive outcomes in other matches, declaring them champions with one game to spare.
This title victory heralds a new era for the Enugu-based club. They have not only won the NPFL championship for the first time since 2016, but they have also clinched a coveted spot in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League.
During the last matchday games, Shooting Stars, Remo Stars, and Enyimba will compete furiously for the second Champions League spot and the third Confederation Cup spot, respectively.
