The individual who previously served as the nation’s minister for labor, Chris Ngige, has been placed under detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, a prominent anti-graft agency. This apprehension stems from suspicions of illicit financial dealings within a governmental institution that operated under the purview of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity during his tenure, and which is reportedly linked to him.

Mr. Ngige, who also held the distinguished position of former chief executive of Anambra State, was apprehended on Wednesday. He is presently undergoing intense questioning by the investigative personnel of the anti-corruption body at its zonal office located in Wuse, Abuja.

Confirmation of his interrogation at the Abuja zonal facility was provided by a reliable insider to Peoples Gazette. This source further divulged that the commission is actively scrutinizing questionable monetary activities amounting to colossal sums, specifically billions of currency units, which transpired within one of the public corporations under the Ministry of Labour while Mr. Ngige presided as minister.

Efforts have been made to reach out to Dele Oyewale, the official spokesperson for the anti-corruption body, for an official statement regarding these developments.

Significantly, this is not the initial instance where Mr. Ngige’s name has been associated with allegations of malfeasance. During his previous capacity as a cabinet minister, he faced prior examination by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, another integrity watchdog. That earlier inquiry pertained to suspected irregularities in contractual agreements and accusations of illicit employment schemes within the Social Insurance Trust Fund, a key public endowment operating under his ministerial oversight.
