Abbas Tajudeen, the speaker, declared the defections on Thursday following the reading of letters from the legislator

Four members of the House of Representatives’ Labour Party Caucus have switched allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The legislators include Chinedu Okere (Owerri municipal/owerri north/Owerri west constituency), Mathew Donatus (Kaura federal constituency of Kaduna), Akiba Bassey (Calabar municipal/Odukpani constituency), and Esosa Iyawe (Oredo federal constituency of E).

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen disclosed the defections on Thursday following the reading of letters from the legislators.

Last year, the Labour Party emerged as Nigeria’s third biggest party due to its noteworthy showing in the general elections. The party secured numerous seats in the federal legislature and several seats in state assemblies. It also secured victory in the governorship election in Abia State. The party’s success was primarily fueled by the appeal of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who secured third place in the election but achieved victories in the same number of states as the ultimate winner, President Bola Tinubu.
