André 3000, Q-Tip, and others are sharing their thoughts on Sly Stone and his impact in a teaser trailer for Questlove’s upcoming documentary on the life of the funk icon.
Scheduled to make its debut at the esteemed Sundance Film Festival next month, SLY LIVES! (also known as The Burden of Black Genius) will subsequently be available to the public on Hulu starting February 13.
With the news of Hulu’s acquisition of the documentary last week, the streamer launched a brief trailer featuring Tip referring to Sly as an “innovator” and Dre stating: “He opened the door to come this way.” When it united, his sound – it felt so advanced.
Take a look at the preview below.
Upon revealing the project in 2022, Questlove remarked: “It’s an understatement to say that Sly’s artistic legacy is part of my DNA… it’s a framework for black musicians.” Receiving the privilege to delve into his history and legacy is more than a dream for me. Sly’s impact on mainstream music and culture overall is incalculable, and what his career signifies is a story that goes beyond time and location.
Amit Dey, leader of MRC Non-Fiction, remarked: “Questlove’s insight, empathy, and respect infuse the urgency that Sly’s narrative and music merit, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with him to realize Sly’s story.”
The Roots drummer first linked with Sly on screen through Summer of Soul, which highlighted the 1969 Harlem Culture Festival—a celebration that lacked the widespread recognition or focus that the renowned 1969 festival, Woodstock, achieved.
In September, it was revealed that Questlove will be directing a documentary on the legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire.
The untitled film is said to offer “exclusive” access to the group’s archives and is backed by the band as well as the estate of EWF founder Maurice White, who passed away in 2016.
“Having been immersed in the Afrocentric joy river of this dynamic group, I’ve gained knowledge about them, I’ve gained knowledge about us, and most importantly, I’ve discovered and redefined myself along the way.” “I’m thrilled to be involved in the journey of safeguarding their genuine and delicate story of Soul, Self & Struggle,” Quest expressed.
