As with the previous year’s list, Taylor Swift is at the top of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards nominees. With ten nominations overall, the pop singer took the lead, followed by Post Malone with nine.

SZA, who took home the 2023 Best R&B Video award for “Shirt,” is a candidate for Video of the Year for her “Snooze” music videos, which featured appearances by Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco. Along with four other categories, including the prestigious Artist of the Year, the Top Dawg Entertainment diva is a finalist for four other honors.

Of all the Hip Hop artists, Megan Thee Stallion has received the most nominations. She is vying for Best Direction for “BOA,” which is competing in three other categories, and Best Collaboration for “Wanna Be,” which she co-wrote with GloRilla.

Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy,” Eminem’s “Houdini,” Travis Scott’s “FE!N,” “BOA,” and GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!” are among the other fierce rivals for Best Hip Hop. Best R&B will feature Alicia Keys’ “Lifeline,” Muni Long’s “Made For Me,” Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama,” Tyla’s “Water,” and Usher, Summer Walker, and 21 Savage’s “Good Good.” Not to be overlooked is the fact that Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us” is a candidate for Song of the Year.

Beyoncé, riding high with Cowboy Carter, received a nomination for Song of the Year for her song “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM.” Shaboozey, who was up against Teddy Swims, Tyla, and other artists for Best New Artist, only received one nomination. The “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” hitmaker’s first-time competitors include Flyana Boss, Joyner Lucas, and Coco Jones.

The 2023 VMAs gained media attention after SZA canceled her eagerly awaited performance over what she saw as a slight. “Obviously, she had one of the best years, if not the best year, of any artist at this point,” TDE’s Terrence “Punch” Henderson said. She should definitely be considered for Artist of the Year, in my opinion. I just couldn’t seem to make sense of it. It’s impolite. Swift made headlines that year when she defeated artists like Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, and Doja Cat.
