On Friday, August 9, Polo G’s comeback album, HOOD POET, is expected to be released. The rapper claims that this 18-song record is one of his most intimate to date and will be his first in almost three years.
In an interview with “The Breakfast Club” on Monday, August 5, the creator of “Martin & Gina” shared details about the album and discussed how his sobriety affected his songwriting. “I was really into drugs when I first started taking care of myself. Off drugs, I wrote a number of really fantastic tunes. “Oh, that’s the only way I’ma [create decent music],” you would sometimes start to think,” he said. “Right now in my life, I write my best music when I’m sober.”
Polo G said that the choice was fully his own when questioned if a health scare, family, or management had any influence. It’s me all the time. It addressed the psychological issues resulting from [engaging in vices]. You know how it feels to overindulge in alcohol when attempting to escape a gloomy place or depression? The reason he strayed from drugs was because of that experience and his desire to never be in that state of mind again.
Polo G acknowledged later in the interview that doing drugs went “hand in hand” with being a rapper, but he was making an effort to break free from it. Sometimes it’s an escape thing, he said.
The Chicago native dropped singles including “Barely Holdin’ On,” “We Uh Shoot,” and “Angels In The Sky” ahead of the release of his full-length album HOOD POET. Lil Durk also appeared on several of these tracks. As of the time of reporting, he hadn’t released the tracklist, although GloRilla, Future, The Kid LAROI, 42 Dugg, G Herbo, Hunxho, and Fridayy are among the confirmed features.
The record was originally scheduled for release in September 2023, but it was postponed due to legal concerns, including a police raid at his residence in Southern California the previous month.
