Two sand miners were saved by the National Inland Waterways Authority’s (NIWA) Calabar district office after their boat overturned while they were traveling.
This was said in a statement released in Lagos on Thursday by NIWA’s managing director, Bola Oyebamiji.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, while on routine sea patrol, Mr. Oyebamiji reported that NIWA received a distress call regarding sand miners who were being overwhelmed by rough tidal waves near the Calabar channel.
When the patrol team received the call, they acted quickly and successfully saved the two young men who were near drowning and having trouble breathing at the time of the event.
The victims, who were between the ages of 23 and 25, were revived and given to their relatives despite the fact that their sand boat and its cargo were totally submerged, he said.
