Following a dominant victory over Bayern Munich, a team Mikel Arteta considers “the best in Europe,” questions are swirling: Did Arsenal just announce their arrival as serious Champions League contenders?
Arsenal’s season has been impressive, with 16 wins, two draws, and only one loss across all competitions.
They’ve also achieved a club first, winning their opening five Champions League matches for the first time since 2005-06, a season that saw them reach the final.
Arteta’s squad stands alone with a perfect Champions League record this season, overcoming a five-game losing streak against Bayern that dated back to 2015.
“The confidence is palpable within Arsenal,” noted former Arsenal defender Matt Upson. “Even in moments where their performance dips, the strong foundation they’ve built ensures they don’t fall below a certain level.”
“Previously, Arsenal showed brilliant flashes but lacked consistency. That’s changed.”
“They consistently deliver a solid performance. Sometimes it might be exceptional, but they are just grinding out these games.”
Before facing Arsenal, Bayern was unbeaten this season and had only lost three of their previous 52 Champions League group stage games.
“Firstly, I must commend my players for their exceptional performance against, in my opinion, the best team in Europe,” said Arteta.
“Individually, we were superb in overcoming the challenges they presented. They understand the hard work we dedicate to each game.”
“We recognize the margins are very fine. We started the week well with a win against Spurs at home. Today is another significant victory, but that’s all.
“Now we rest, enjoy dinner, and tomorrow we begin preparing for Stamford Bridge [against Chelsea on Sunday].”
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, named player of the match, also believes this win is a major step towards winning a trophy, something Arsenal hasn’t achieved since 2020.
“Look at Bayern Munich this season, they have been the best team in Europe. This was probably the toughest game tactically we have played this season. The way they work it is so, so good.” Rice told TNT Sports.
“We went man to man with them in the second half and I thought tonight we were outstanding. The manager is so happy. It was a special European night.
“Yes, definitely [it feels different to last season]. There are so many leaders in the team. We are just taking it one game at a time. There is a hunger and desire to win every game. There is a long way to go – let’s not get carried away.”
Arsenal’s bench ‘delivers in all areas’
With forwards Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus unavailable, Arteta utilized Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli from the bench.
Despite injuries to several forwards, the return of captain Martin Odegaard and the progress of Gyokeres and Havertz suggests Arteta’s options are improving.
Having signed eight players in the summer, Arteta has successfully managed the challenges he’s faced. Madueke scored his first goal for the club against Bayern, while Martinelli scored his fourth goal in as many games in the Champions League.
“I couldn’t have picked a better game to score my first Arsenal goal. I am so happy the team got the win as well,” Madueke said.
“It’s an incredible statement, but we know the work we put in. We go into these game with every confidence that we are going to win.
“I am a confident player. I don’t like someone telling me I cannot do something. But my team-mates and the staff have belief in me.”
Upson believes Arsenal’s squad depth is a key factor in maintaining their high standards.
“Arsenal’s bench contributes in every aspect, providing both new energy and quality,” Upson said.
“We’re seeing numerous players come on and make a difference. They’re all competing for a starting spot.”
“That’s crucial. It’s difficult for a manager to keep a squad this deep motivated, unified, and eager to play, while also reacting positively when they’re not in the team.”
“Ultimately, Mikel Arteta has every player aligned with the same goal: winning the Premier League title and progressing as far as possible in the Champions League.”
