The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has implored the government to tackle the fundamental issues fueling insecurity and ensure fairness for those who have suffered from terrible crimes.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, made this request on Wednesday in Abuja, during the 32nd Triennial General Assembly and 96th anniversary of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN).
The event’s theme was “God’s Demand for Justice and Righteousness,” based on Amos 5:24.
Mr. Okoh urged the government to improve the country’s security systems to safeguard the lives and possessions of all Nigerians.
The cleric encouraged the Church to speak “honestly and boldly against unfairness, inequality, and wrongdoing,” and to advocate for the defenseless.
He also called on the Christian Council of Nigeria to support CAN in demanding that the government protect the sanctity of human life and the respect of all citizens.
“The government has a constitutional, moral, and sacred duty to protect lives and property. It must reinforce security measures in at-risk areas and hold criminals accountable.
“The Church must stand together in seeking justice for victims of awful acts and collaborate to create a nation where justice prevails,” he stated.
In his opening remarks, Chairman of the CCN, FCT Chapter, Rev. Adams Mutuwa, encouraged attendees to approach the meeting with a mindset of unwavering faith.
Mr. Mutuwa recognized the difficulties and security concerns facing the nation, stressing that the Church’s hope rests on God’s ultimate authority, “not on the passing trends of the world.”
He reminded the attendees of the importance of togetherness and focused action, referencing 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 where the Apostle Paul describes being under pressure but not defeated.
Similarly, Chairman of the North Central Zone and Archbishop of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja, Most Rev. Michael Akinwale, emphasized the need for the Church to speak truthfully to those in authority and demand justice when faced with injustice.
Mr. Akinwale noted that the CCN, as a significant part of CAN, serves as an advocate for the unheard, promoting Christian respect and honesty, national unity, effective leadership, and community involvement.
He urged the assembly not to avoid the truth and to speak out against injustice.
